  • Grain Price Increase | November 2021

Grain Price Increase | November 2021

Price increases among all industries is becoming more and more common over the last few months, and now malted barley is the next. Our major suppliers of grain and dry yeast have instituted substantial price increases to all of their brewing customers. This includes us at KJ, our other homebrew shop friends, and every brewery in the country.

Why Are Prices Going Up Now?

There are two factors at play here. First, the global supply chain issues every industry is facing has become a factor. Shipping (very heavy) grain across the world has gotten considerably more expensive. Second, 2021 was a very difficult year for crops. Poor weather weakened the crop and limited overall yield. The combination of these two events has lead to major price increases in our industry.

    New Pricing

Over the next month we will begin the process of raising prices on all grains, recipes, and adjuncts. Some smaller increases will be made to Fermentis brand dry yeasts as well. I am sure over the next couple of months prices of beer at the LCBO and breweries will go up as well to reflect these changes.

We have kept our grain and recipe prices the same for 3+ years, in that time we have seen supply price increases on our end but have elected to not pass it on, but this years increase is big enough that we simply can't keep our current pricing.

Fulls bags of grain will be going up between $5 - $20 depending on the supplier and variety, and grains sold by the pound will be going up between $0.15 - $0.40.

Our hope is that is a temporary issue, and that prices go down next year, but at this point it is too early to tell if that is the case. We're at the end of a very very long supply chain.
